Tipping basics
How to Calculate a Tip
To calculate a tip, multiply the bill total by the tip percentage as a decimal. For a 20% tip on a $50 bill: $50 × 0.20 = $10 tip, for a total of $60.
If you're splitting the bill, add the tip first, then divide the total by the number of people. Use the bill splitter to do this in seconds.
What is the standard tip percentage in the US?
The current standard in the US is 18–20% for sit-down restaurant service. 15% is still considered acceptable, and 25% is reserved for exceptional service. Counter service and takeout typically range from 10–15%, though tipping is optional at the counter.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Most etiquette guidelines suggest tipping on the pre-tax subtotal. In practice, many diners tip on the post-tax total — it simplifies the math and benefits the server slightly.
How do I quickly calculate 20% in my head?
Move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then double it to get 20%. On a $47 bill: 10% = $4.70, doubled = $9.40 tip.
